Thoughts:
A lot of what you do in Ubuntu these days ‘just works’. There are, however a few things which call for some tweaking.
I can’t help but draw parallels between Ubuntu and Windows in terms of the breakthroughs and development cycles.
If you consider Ubuntu <7.10 to be Windows 95 with it’s IRQ conflicts and half realized PnP scheme then Ubuntu 8.04 is certainly Windows 98.
In my opinion the only thing keeping Ubuntu from becoming the next Windows XP is vendor support.
